Wind, storms and your fence
Spring storms across Green Country can push a whole run of privacy fence flat in one afternoon. A solid wood fence acts like a sail, so the way it is built matters as much as the wood.

Right after a storm
- Photograph every damaged section before anything is moved.
- Keep pets in until the gap is closed.
- Look at the base of each post. Snapped posts point to rot; posts pulled out whole point to shallow footings.
- Check for fallen limbs leaning on the fence before you touch it.
Insurance
Many homeowner policies cover fence damage from wind or a fallen tree, but limits and deductibles vary. Call your insurer before cleanup and ask what photos and quotes they want. A written quote that splits repair from upgrade can help with the claim.
Repair or rebuild
If a few posts failed and the rest stand firm, a section repair may be enough. If posts are soft at the ground line all along the run, the next storm will find the weak ones, and a rebuild may cost less over time. Ask the contractor to push on a few standing posts and tell you what they see.
Building for wind
- Steel posts. They bend before they snap and do not rot.
- Deeper footings. Ask for depth in writing.
- Gapped styles. Shadowbox or slatted designs let some wind through.
- Shorter spans. Posts closer together spread the load.
Clay soil and drought
Clay in some Tulsa yards swells after heavy rain and pulls back in dry summers. Over a few seasons that can loosen posts. Deeper footings and good drainage around posts help.
Before digging new holes
Oklahoma asks you to call 811 before you dig. source Most crews place the call; ask yours to confirm.
Storm chasers
After big storms, out-of-town crews knock on doors. Ask for a local address, a written price and proof of insurance, and avoid paying the full amount up front.
Shared fences
When a fence on a property line goes down, talk with the neighbor before booking. Some neighbors split the cost, and both insurers may want to know. Agree in writing on style and which side faces out, so the rebuild does not start a dispute.
