Iron and aluminum fences in Tulsa
An open metal fence marks the line without blocking the view. In Tulsa you will hear three names for it: wrought iron, ornamental steel and aluminum. They are not the same.
The three kinds
- Wrought iron. True hand-worked iron is rare today. Most "iron" fence is welded steel.
- Ornamental steel. Strong and heavy. Coated to slow rust, but scratches need touch-up.
- Aluminum. Lighter, will not rust, and often costs less than steel. Less stout against a hard hit.
Where each fits
Aluminum is a frequent pick around pools and front yards. Steel suits driveway gates and spots where strength matters. Neither gives privacy; add shrubs if you want screening.
Wind and hail
An open fence lets wind pass, so it rides out Oklahoma storms better than a solid wood fence. Hail can chip a coating. Ask about the finish and its warranty.
Gates
Wide driveway gates sag if the posts are too light. Ask about post size and whether an opener can be added later.
Pools and dogs
For a pool, picket spacing and gate latches have to meet code. Ask the City of Tulsa or your town what applies. For small dogs, ask about puppy pickets near the bottom.
Slopes
Many metal panels can rack to follow a slope. Others step down, leaving gaps under each panel.

Upkeep
Wash metal fence once a year with mild soap. On steel, touch up chips quickly so rust does not spread under the coating.
